Nigeria: Katsina communities protest insecurity, block Funtua-Dandume-Birnin Gwari Road
Olaide Oyelude, Katsina.
Some youths from communities along Funtua-Dandume-Birnin-Gwari Road reportedly took to the streets early Saturday morning to protest the insecurity in the area.
The youths reportedly blocked the Funtua-Dandume-Birnin-Gwari Road to register their grievances.
Although details on the protests were still sketchy as of the time of reporting the incident, it was learnt that motorists plying the route were delayed for several hours because of the incident.
A motorist who was travelling to the southern part of the country through the route spoke on the phone that he and other road users were delayed for almost three hours before the police from Funtua intervened.
The motorist who spoke under the condition of anonymity said the protesters decried incessant attacks by gunmen and other criminals in their communities.
It was learnt that the protesters gathered on the road as early as 7am and used tree branches and worn-out tyres to block the road.
The protesters alleged that their communities suffered attacks every day from gunmen.
They added that motorists plying the route also suffered attà cks by armed robbers, the development which they alleged had made several road users abandon the route.
A resident of one of the communities who gave his name as Sadi Bala said the youths were mostly from those attacked recently by gunmen
He added, “No fewer than fifty people from the communities that were kidnapped during the week by the gunmen are still being held by their abductors.”
It was further alleged that bandits attacked some communities including Ilalla, Katsalle, Kadawa, and Mahuta around midnight on Friday while residents were said to have repelled them.
The spokesman for the Katsina police command, SP Gambo Isah could not be reached for comments while the SMS sent to him on the incident was yet to be replied to.
