Kanu's Invocation of Amaechi's memory and His resolute stance that he will not beg the Nigerian Govt for his release is not merely a personal declaration; it's a reflection of his call for justice and respect to the rule of law
Nnamdi Kanu |
In the labyrinthine corridors of justice, where the quest for freedom meets the walls of oppression, emerges the unwavering spirit of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Locked in the heart of Nigeria's capital at the Department of State Security Services (DSS) headquarters, Kanu's story resonates with resilience, defiance, and a powerful invocation of the memory of Pa Mbazulike Amaechi, a true patriot who fought for justice in the face of disregard.
On the 28th day of August 2023, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu received a visit from his legal team led by the indomitable Prof. Mike Ozekhome, SAN. The purpose of the visit was not only to provide Kanu with legal updates but also to underscore the unrelenting efforts being undertaken to address his plight and the disregard for his well-being by the DSS.
During the visit Mazi Nnamdi Kanu stated that begging the Federal Government to release him at this point is an insult to the memory of late Pa Mbazulike Amaechi, who despite his age and ill health, repeatedly travelled from the South-East to Abuja, begging the Federal Government of Nigeria, to honour his dying wish, which request was treated with greatest disdain by the Federal Government, and was also not honoured. Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is of the firm view that he does not need to beg the FGN to release him. The Court of Appeal has already made a pronouncement in that regard and that pronouncement has remained sacrosanct till date.
The memory of late Pa Mbazulike Amaechi, a seasoned Nigerian nationalist and former Minister of Aviation, lingers as a symbol of courage and determination. In his twilight years and despite his frail health, Amaechi undertook arduous journeys from the South-East to the nation's capital, Abuja to beg the former Nigeria President, Muhammadu Buhari to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. His mission was to beseech the Federal Government to fulfil his dying wish, an appeal that fell on deaf ears. Amaechi's plea was met with disdain, exposing a painful chasm between the citizenry's yearning for justice and the government's response. Kanu's invocation of Amaechi's memory is a poignant reminder that the struggle for justice and freedom is a continuum, and the cycle of disregard must be broken.
Nnamdi Kanu's resolute stance that he will not beg the Federal Government for his release is not merely a personal declaration; it's a reflection of his unwavering faith in the rule of law. His assertion that he doesn't need to beg is grounded in the pronouncement of the Court of Appeal, an institutional pillar of justice. Kanu's message to the authorities is that justice should not be a plea, it should be an imperative. His words are an affirmation of the importance of adhering to established legal principles, regardless of the individual involved.
The struggle for self-determination, embedded in the fabric of Kanu's narrative, stretches back to the Biafran War and beyond. His refusal to beg for his release is a symbolic stand against the cycle of begging for justice, against the backdrop of Amaechi's futile appeals. It's a declaration that justice is not a favour, but an inherent right that should be upheld without compromise.
In addressing the concerns of those who might not fully comprehend the complexity of his case, Kanu emphasizes that he has been legally discharged by the Court of Appeal. This discharge also included a prohibition of further trial and detention. With no pending charges against him, Kanu's plea for justice echoes beyond the confines of his cell.
The assertion that begging for his release would be an insult to Amaechi's memory is a profound reflection on the struggle for justice. It serves as a challenge to a government that turned a blind eye to one man's dying wish, and it beckons for a revaluations of what justice truly means in a democratic society.
As the legal battle continues, Kanu's call for the Supreme Court to expedite the hearing of the Federal Government's appeal adds a new chapter to this unfolding saga. It's a chapter that hinges on principles of fairness, equality, and justice, and it compels the nation to confront its commitment to these ideals.
In a world where echoes of history are often drowned out by the clamour of the present, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu stands as a testament to the enduring pursuit of justice. His defiance in the face of oppression, coupled with the memory of a patriot like Pa Mbazulike Amaechi, paints a picture of courage and resilience that can't be erased. It's a narrative that resounds with a simple but powerful message: justice must not be begged for; it must be demanded, upheld, and cherished by all who believe in its sanctity.
