Pretext For Another Genocide: Why Ndigbo Must Not Allow The Yoruba 'Victim' Card To Hold Sway

It is yet to be confirmed if Amaka Patience Sunnberger who made a retaliatory insidious statement against the Yoruba is of Igbo origin or with a Canadian citizenship document although investigations are ongoing in this regard. However, it is also no news that the Yoruba have already mobilized assets through various state medium at their unlimited disposal to drag down Mrs Amaka either by hoodwinking Canadian justice system to jail her or using diplomatic channels to pressure the Canadian government to facilitate her extradition to Nigeria where it is certain she will be "finished off."

For reference purposes, Mrs Sunnberger who in a live tiktok program called for Yoruba and Bini folks to be mass poisoned, happened to be responding to an insidious statement made by one Edo indigene based in Austria, Mr. Kingsley, who was on X space (formerly Twitter) campaigning and advocating for genocide across the globe against Ndigbo based on unfounded and debunked allegation of daring to 'disrespect' the Bini empire. Kingsley in his words proclaimed and shamelessly promoted the hateful notion that every Igbo child and teenager, home and diaspora should be "unalived.” (Killed) This was the incentive which prompted Mrs Amaka to utter that the Yariba and Bini should be mass poisoned. There is no justification for mass murder, regardless of who it is coming from. Make no mistake!

Many, especially some Igbo, have tried to dissociate themselves from Mrs Amaka for going out of the rails or to succinctly put,  for advocating for an "Un-Igbo" methodology of conflict resolution or retaliation.

Many even argued that she is non-Igbo contracted to defame and slander Ndigbo or an agent provocateur planted to create strife, and as such should be allowed to be scapegoated and punished by the Nigerian government or the Canadian government as the case maybe.

But there is a missing link in that school of thought. Hence, we wish to point it out.

If Ndigbo — a people whom since after the pogroms and genocidal war of 1966-70 have continued to express their anguish to an adamant, brutish world as to how they, victims of genocide have been abandoned — all of a sudden seemingly becomes perpetrators of genocide against another race, even before the world acts or recognize that there was a genocide against them.  Then there is a big problem. That is exactly the motive and end game behind this stunt. It does not matter if Mrs Sunnberger is a provocateur or not. What matters is that her Igbo origin is mainstreamed.

The Yoruba are clearly intent on rubbishing the narrative of Ndigbo being "victims of genocide" by turning around to make themselves victims of non-existent Igbo genocide placed on a global front burner with a ferocious media campaign. This explains how every single social pundits, conventional media swung into motion and in one voice terming and attempting to mainstream the assertions of Mrs Sunnberger as a "call for genocide against the Yoruba race" but also ignored and suppressed where every Igbo child was called to be mass slaughtered. If that is also not genocide, I wonder what is.

Let it be said here that Ndigbo do not pride in the tag of being victims of genocide. However it has become a common determinant factor or term used to draw the attention of the global community of good conscience as to the plight and injustice meted against them by the Nigerian state.

That the shameless Yoruba are vying for this victims card, even though there is really no prospect of such occurring, can be seriously argued to be that the #IgboMustGo or the forceful, violent and mass expulsion agenda is still in the pipeline. For that to occur to a reasonable extent, there is a need for a pretext as well as a ploy to dampen the reaction of the international community who might hold the Yoruba responsible for facilitating another genocide, pogroms against Ndigbo across Nigeria yet again, as it seems they are unsatisfied that Ndigbo survived and overcame the first genocide they initiated in 1967/1970.

If this happens and Mrs Amaka Sunnberger is scapegoated in Canada as the 'Igbo lady' who called for genocide against the Yoruba, then it will go a long way in the Tinubu administration’s agenda to vilify Ndigbo not only in eyes of the international community but also in the minds of their citizens as obtained recently in South Africa. And should such happen, the attacks against Igbo lives and properties can occur without much eyebrows being raised.

Since Bola Tinubu assumed office, Ndigbo have officially fronted as the bogeymen from Nigeria who are responsible for Nigeria's ugly repute even in diplomatic circles. A foreign policy asset he inherited from his predecessor – the dead Buhari. Although he appears to have helplessly taken it further, deploying mass media campaign and grassroots calumny in this regard.

This is why Ndigbo must not be cajoled or gaslighted to let the Tinubu administration or better still the Yoruba to spin this narrative. It will be a time bomb. There shall be no condoning of mass murder rhetorics by Ndigbo, as it is immoral, unethical even in the Igbo cultural and philosophical school of thought. However, neither should we allow this "genocide perpetrators" tag to stick.

We must ensure that the international community is made to understand that Ndigbo have no interest engaging in genocide against another race and that Mrs Sunnberger's assertions are being driven out of context by people who have ulterior aim against Ndigbo. The prospect of an impending pogrom not ruled out.

Additionally, that people from the Yoruba race have made worse insidious statements, actions against Ndigbo including the wife of the President Remi  Tinubu, Oba of Lagos, etc., to the extent that even books have been written to deepen the hate consciousness of the next generation in this regard. What could be worse than that?

Ndigbo and the Biafran community at large must put all hands on deck, stick and defend this truth as our survival depends on it. Ambivalence is complicity and that will earn no one a safe haven when the chips are down. The events of 1966 is a historical glaring lesson in this regard.
