IPOB Directorate of States Congratulates Trump on Historic Comeback, Calls for Justice for Detained Biafrans

With the remarkable victory of Donald J. Trump as the 47th President-elect of the United States, the IPOB Directorate of States has extended heartfelt congratulations to the President-elect, hailing his return as a beacon of hope for all who believe in justice, peace, and the rights of indigenous peoples.

For many around the globe, Trump’s return represents the promise of renewed leadership at a time of global unrest. Under the Biden-Harris administration, the U.S. faced economic uncertainties and conflicting interests abroad. The world has witnessed escalating crises, from the Middle East to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, alongside underreported atrocities in Sudan and Ethiopia. The urgency for change has resonated far beyond American borders, with citizens across the world looking toward Trump’s comeback as a possible shift toward global stability.

For the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Trump’s victory holds a unique significance. In 2016, Trump’s first victory sparked hope among IPOB members, who saw his stance on self-determination as potentially supportive of their peaceful pursuit of Biafran independence. In celebration of Trump’s inauguration in 2017, hundreds of IPOB supporters organized a peaceful rally in Igweocha (Port Harcourt) on January 20, 2017, calling it the "IPOB-Trump Solidarity Rally." The event, intended as a joyful and peaceful celebration, quickly turned into a tragic ordeal for many.

Nigerian security forces responded with severe repression, arresting 65 peaceful demonstrators and branding the rally "unlawful." What was meant to be an expression of solidarity with a new American president turned into a nightmare for these Biafran activists, who were detained and accused unjustly of breaking Nigerian laws.

Nine years later, those 65 IPOB members remain in detention, held without a fair trial. Attempts to secure their release through legitimate, democratic avenues have been repeatedly obstructed by Nigerian authorities. In an outright denial of their human rights, the Nigerian government has ignored constitutional protections for peaceful assembly and freedom of expression. The detention of these individuals, whose only "crime" was celebrating the inauguration of a U.S. president, reveals a harsh reality: Biafrans who assert their identity and peacefully advocate for self-determination are often met with brutal suppression.

Despite consistent appeals to Nigerian authorities, these detainees remain behind bars, their futures uncertain. This prolonged detention, devoid of legal grounds, underscores the challenges faced by Biafrans in their struggle for justice and freedom.

Under the leadership of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, IPOB has championed a peaceful approach to self-determination, seeking an internationally supervised referendum for Biafra’s independence. For IPOB members and other supporters of self-determination, Trump’s stance on indigenous rights offers a glimmer of hope that global leaders might advocate for those denied freedom in their own land.

Trump’s potential influence in supporting indigenous peoples’ rights to self-determination is viewed by IPOB as a critical step toward international recognition of their cause. IPOB’s Directorate of States sees this as an opportunity to bring awareness to the plight of Biafrans and to rally international support against human rights abuses in Nigeria.

As the world congratulates Donald Trump on his return to power, IPOB reiterates its call for justice for the detained Biafrans, now nine years into unlawful detention. The Directorate calls on global leaders, human rights organizations, and all advocates of freedom to remember these individuals and to press Nigeria to uphold the fundamental rights of its citizens.

“Justice delayed is justice denied,” as the saying goes, and for these peaceful Biafran activists, the delay has been all too long. As Trump’s leadership rekindles hope for fairness and democratic ideals, IPOB urges the international community to stand for justice, ensuring that those who simply voiced their beliefs are no longer treated as criminals.
