The Deceitful Plea of PeacePro and the Unaddressed Injustice Against Biafrans
It's disheartening and downright absurd that a so-called "Foundation for Peace Professionals" (PeacePro) would come out with such a misguided and tone-deaf plea. "Lay down your arms," they say, in a feeble attempt to preach peace, while ignoring the harsh reality of Nigeria’s persistent injustice and tyranny against the Biafran people. How typical it is to mischaracterize IPOB (the Indigenous People of Biafra) as an armed movement when, in reality, IPOB remains unarmed and non-violent in its advocacy for self-determination. Only armed groups can lay down arms, and IPOB does not fit that category.
Let’s get one thing clear: the Nigerian government’s so-called “No Victor, No Vanquished” declaration was nothing but a cruel joke—a slap in the face of every Biafran who lived through the war and its senseless killings. A government that left its own people to starve, bombed schools and homes, and decimated entire communities cannot suddenly play the “reconciliation” card decades later. Did they truly expect peace to grow from the ground where innocent lives were buried in mass graves, where atrocities were swept under the rug?
To call IPOB’s actions "violent" and accuse them of "dishonoring the memory" of those who embraced peace is laughable at best. Were those "peaceful" Biafran leaders really so naive as to believe that the same Nigerian government that slaughtered their people would now embrace them with open arms? Dialogue over conflict, they preach. What a farce! The Nigerian government has repeatedly proven that the only language it understands is that of violence, oppression, and intimidation.
If PeacePro truly believes that dialogue will miraculously bring lasting peace in a country where dialogue is treated as a privilege reserved for a select few, they are living in a dream world. And now, to criticize Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s call for his unconditional release without the "commitment to peace" is just another attempt to suppress the voice of truth. Kanu's struggle is not about power or domination; it’s about the right to exist, the right to live without fear, oppression, and genocide disguised as governance.
Let us address the elephant in the room—the so-called "unknown gunmen," a convenient bogeyman created to tarnish IPOB's image and justify the government’s excessive militarization of the South East. These gunmen are not a creation of IPOB but a symptom of a system that has failed its people. If PeacePro is genuinely interested in peace, they should first demand accountability from the Nigerian government, whose neglect and systemic oppression fuel insecurity in the region.
To claim that the solution lies solely in “non-violent advocacy” is to dismiss the reality faced by the Biafran people, whose cries for justice have been ignored for far too long. Peace, as they like to call it, is a two-way street. If the federal government wants peace, it must first stop waging war against its own citizens. If there’s one thing history has taught us, it is this: burying the truth only allows lies to flourish.
In conclusion, PeacePro’s appeal is nothing more than a hollow call to maintain the status quo. They urge IPOB to lay down arms they do not possess, all while ignoring the root cause of this agitation—years of injustice and systemic marginalization. So, let’s say it plainly: the Nigerian government and its enablers are the real enemies of peace.
If there is to be any real reconciliation, it must start with the government laying down its weapons of destruction, addressing the grievances of the Biafran people, and making amends for the countless wrongs it has done. Anything less is mere lip service. Until then, calls for peace will remain nothing more than empty words, echoing in a void of unaddressed injustice.
